Sausage rolls and pork pies are quick and affordable alternatives to preparing your own party food during the holiday season, when family time is particularly precious.

What are the best snacks for a Christmas party?

You can’t beat a Christmas get-together, but it can be tricky to prepare delicious buffet favourites from scratch when you are also juggling a million things on your Christmas ‘to do’ list.  We have a variety of products that are ideal for Christmas or New Year buffets – these delicious snacks are a quick and easy solution to minimising prep time and are sure to please the crowds, particularly when served with a variety of seasonal dips such as pickles and chutneys and apple or cranberry sauce.

Christmas side dish recipes

Spicy red cabbage with cranberries and orange

Why not pair your pork pie or sausage roll with a festive side dish? This red cabbage recipe is packed with wintery flavours such as cranberries, orange zest and bay and is a fiery accompaniment to our sausage rolls.

Prep time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Serves 8-10

Ingredients

  • Wall’s Pastry Sausage Rolls
  • 1 large red cabbage, quartered and finely sliced
  • 2 large garlic cloves, crushed
  • 150g dried cranberries
  • Zest and juice of 2 large oranges
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar or pomegranate molasses
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes
  • 1 large red onion, finely sliced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 50g light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. In a large pan fry the onion in the olive oil for 3-4 minutes, then add the garlic, bay leaf and chilli flakes. Continue to cook for a further 2 minutes.
  2. Add the cabbage and stir to combine. Cook for 10 minutes.
  3. Add the sugar, cranberries, orange juice and zest, balsamic vinegar or pomegranate molasses and season.
  4. Cook for 45 minutes – 1 hour, stirring regularly until the cabbage is soft.

Beetroot, cranberry and chilli chutney

At Christmas, there’s nothing nicer than a spoonful of chutney on top of a peppery pork pie made with hot water crust pastry. Our winter chutney recipe is made with diced beetroot, cranberries, apple and cumin and is ready-to-eat after simmering for an hour. Keep it in the fridge for up to a month and enjoy with your Pork Farms pork pies or one of our tasty Wall’s sausage rolls.

Prep time: 25 minutes

Cooking time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Makes 2 medium-sized jars

Ingredients

  • Pork Farms’ Mini Pork Pies or Wall’s Pastry sausage rolls
  • 1kg raw beetroot, peeled and diced into small cubes
  • 1 cooking apple, peeled and grated
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 75g dried cranberries
  • 1/2 red chilli, finely chopped
  • 500ml red wine vinegar
  • 400g caster sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Add all the ingredients to a large pan and bring to the boil.
  2. Reduce to a simmer for approx 1 hour 20 minutes until the beetroot is cooked and the liquid has reduced to a sticky chutney consistency.
  3. Sterilise 2 medium-sized kilner jars in boiling water.
  4. Allow the chutney to cool and transfer to the jars. Store in the fridge.
